Here’s  a brief summary of the security plugins covered:

  • WP-MalWatch:  Pros: Will give you a nightly scan and let you know the security status of your WordPress site. Cons: It’s a bit outdated.
  • Better WP Security: Pros: Adjusts your WP Site to harden your security, great for new setups.  Cons: May break a few plugins (especially if you have a mature site).
  • WP Security Scan: Pros: A solid security scanner.  Updated constantly to let you know what you need to adjust.  Cons: It gives you recommendations only. You have to then go in and fix the issues.
  • Secure WordPress: Pros: Adjusts settings for you.  Great all around security plugin.  Updated constantly.  Cons: Could break a few things if you have a more complicated site.
  • BulletProof Security: Pros: Heavy security plugin.  Tested to work with many of the top plugins.  New Pro Version expected August 2011.  Cons: Though tested, still could break a few things on more complicated sites.

Which plugin do we recommend?  It really does depend upon your own situation.  Which ever direction you decide, most of these plugins will alter your WordPress settings, so make sure you have that backup handy (just in case).  What?!?  No backup?  Guess what goes on your to-do list now?!?
