Before You Install the WordPress 3.3 Sonny Update…

Before you install the WordPress 3.3 Sonny Update

This is just a quick post…

WordPress released v3.3… the “Sonny” update.

You can read more about it here…

http://wordpress.org/news/2011/12/sonny/

I’ve installed it on some of my test sites and will have a video out shortly.  It looks great!

One note of caution…

This goes for ANY major update (which WordPress 3.3 is).

DON’T IMMEDIATELY INSTALL this update if you are using any 3rd party (premium)
themes or are using premium plugins.

WordPress does their best to test all aspects before they release the final version, but it’s still not going to work perfectly with all things WordPress.

As you read this, someone is panicking because their theme stopped working, or their plug-in isn’t functioning… they are putting in helpdesk/support requests and the developers are working overtime to fix any issues.

If you are running anything other than the basic WordPress site… give it a week or so before you update.  Then check with your theme developer and plug-in developer to verify that all is well.  If they’ve fixed anything, they’ll have an update available.  Install their updates, then install the WordPress update and you *should* be good to go!

That being said… BACKUP your WordPress site before you update… just in case!

Not sure how to backup your site?  There’s a video for that.  Get your free WordPress training videos here!

I’ll be glad to try to answer any questions… just leave them in the comments below!

    Hey Mercer,
I'm one that is panicking because I use a premium theme (optimize press) and now I cannot access my Admin area as I get an error message when I try to log in. I would access the help desk but can't get into my dashboard. So… do you have a suggestion of how to find the help I need.

    Thanks in advance!
    Laura

Hey Laura – I tested 3.3 on another site I have that uses OptimizePress and haven't had any immediate issues (I'm able to login to the dashboard). It's probably not the theme, but may be an issue with either the install or a plugin. Here's what I would do:

      1. Restore a recent backup (if you have it).
      2. If no backup, try reinstalling 3.3 manually (via FTP)

Hopefully that'll do the trick. Let me know!

    Thanks Mercer,
I think at this point I need a webmaster person. I don't know how to do what you just suggested. I did a terrible thing too…. and didn't back up like I was supposed to.

If you have a suggestion of who I can pay to help me, please let me know.

    thanks,
    Laura

Yep… I\’ve heard of a few conflicts here and there… plugins mostly. Glad to hear you haven\’t seen any issues!

Hi Chris, I recently had to take over my groups website and although I have some knowledge of wordpress, I am afraid to update it. I am scared I'm going to crash the site. I am presently at 3.2.1 and I see wordpress is at 3.3.2. What should I do?

Hey Jason – When it doubt… back everything up! 🙂 It\’s a good idea to get to 3.3.2 (since it has so many security updates) but make sure you have a backup of your database and files (just in case something goes wrong during the upgrade). I\’ve got a couple of videos about that in the members area if you need some guidance…
